Air Quality Update

Dear Central Manor Parents/Guardians:

We want to provide you with an update on the status of our investigation into the source of odors reported in recent months inside classrooms at Central Manor Elementary School.

An extensive examination of the school’s heating and cooling system has revealed the presence of mold below the individual HVAC units, which is exacerbated by condensation from the system’s heating and air conditioning coils.

Despite these findings, Central Manor continues to be safe for both students and staff, based on air quality testing.

We are currently working with our insurance carrier and restoration companies on a plan to do a thorough cleaning of the impacted areas and eliminate the condensation associated with the heating and cooling coils in the HVAC system. The work will be completed during the summer. We also will complete an extensive cleaning of all Central Manor classrooms.

After these projects conclude, we will continue to closely monitor the building with the goal of eliminating the growth of mold and offensive odors entering classrooms.

We believe that the work done this summer will keep Central Manor a safe environment for learning. We appreciate the patience and flexibility shown by our students and staff as we have investigated this issue.

Thank you for your continued support. We hope you have a safe and relaxing summer.

4th Grade Visits the Zimmerman Center for Heritage

May 17, 2024

This week our entire 4th grade visited the Zimmerman Center in Columbia, PA as part of a year long watershed project. During the trip students participated in a scavenger hunt at the waterfront pavilion. Then they went on a guided hike to Native Lands County Park and saw the site of a former Susquehannock Indian town. Finally, they took part in a field stream study and learned about how people affect the health of rivers, streams and the Chesapeake Bay. The Zimmerman Center is part of the Susquehanna National Heritage Area, a national destination for cultural discovery.

Fulton Theater Trip

May 10, 2024

Today Central Manor students in grades 1-3 visited the Fulton Theatre in downtown Lancaster to see the musical Junie B. Jones. Central Manor teachers wrote a Penn Manor Education Foundation grant to take their students to the Fulton. For many of the students it was the first time they were ever in a theater for a live musical or play. After the musical students were able to ask cast members questions. Thank you PMEF for making this amazing experience possible for our students!

One final time...

This past Tuesday evening Mrs. Repkoe and Ms. Almoney lead the Spring Concert for one final time!  It has been a pleasure and an honor watching Central Manor students share their love of music as it has been poured into them from these two very special ladies.

HUGE thank you to this Dynamic Duo for all of their time and dedication spent with our students and building the music program.

Solar Eclipse

April 3, 2024

Solar eclipses are wondrous natural events, and we want to ensure that Penn Manor students and staff have a safe and enjoyable experience on Monday, April 8. During the eclipse, we will experience a period of diminished light, similar to twilight, beginning at 2:06 p.m. and peaking at 3:22 p.m. before ending at 4:34 p.m.

Penn Manor is not altering school schedules on April 8 and is not providing special eyewear for viewing the eclipse. It is important to emphasize that students must never look at the sun directly, even while the eclipse is under way.

Teachers may want to consider creating a safe pinhole camera to view the crescent sun indirectly during the eclipse. This simple technique projects the image onto the pavement or sidewalk. Here's how: https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/edu/learn/project/how-to-make-a-pinhole-camera/

We also encourage staff members and students to safely watch the eclipse live via NASA's live video stream: https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/future-eclipses/eclipse-2024/live/. Additional eclipse educational resources are available here: https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/

Thank you for helping to make this historic event a safe and enjoyable experience for our students.

Nominees sought for 2024 Outstanding Employee & Educator Awards

February 2, 2024

If you know of a teacher or other staff member who goes out of his or her way to help students and support our schools, please consider nominating them for an Outstanding Educator/Employee Award. The school district will present the 2023-2024 awards for Outstanding Elementary Educator, Outstanding Secondary Educator and Outstanding Employee later this year. You can nominate candidates for these awards from January 19 through February 29. Nominations can be submitted by parents/guardians, students and colleagues of Penn Manor staff members. Nominations will be accepted online only.

Last year’s honorees were Brian Wimer, head custodian at Martic Elementary, the Outstanding Employee of the Year; Julie Yoder, academic support teacher at Hambright Elementary, the Outstanding Elementary Educator of the Year; and Kimberly Frey, math teacher at Penn Manor High School, named Outstanding Secondary Educator

Please note that honorees from previous years are not eligible this year. Here is the list of past winners.

Here are an explanation of the awards and nomination guidelines.

The Outstanding Educator Awards should be based on a teacher’s ability to promote academic growth in her/his students and for outstanding pupil-teacher relationships. A person may nominate one elementary teacher, one secondary teacher or one teacher on each level. The nominee must currently be employed by Penn Manor School District.

Outstanding Employee Awards should be based on a staff member’s ability to support the educational program and the quality of his/her relationships with staff and students.  A person may nominate one elementary staff member, one secondary staff member or one employee on each level. The nominee must currently be employed by Penn Manor.

Thank you for taking the time to acknowledge the hard work of our employees!

CM 5th Graders Participate in JA Biztown

January 26, 2024

Central Manor 5th graders have been participating in a Junior Achievement program called Biztown since the beginning of December.  JA BizTown combines daily lessons with a day-long visit to a simulated town. During the classroom lessons, students learn about financial literacy, community and economy, philanthropy, and entrepreneurship. The students even participated in the election process to elect our town Mayor and District Attorney. Each student completed a job application and resume to learn about the job hiring process. They went through the interview process to be hired for their specific job within a business. The interviews were conducted by Penn Manor administrators and parent volunteers. On the day of our visit, our 5th graders will be responsible for operating 15 different businesses and will need to work as a team to pay off their loans, create services and goods, and provide quality customer service to their peers. This program teaches students about life skills in a unique and engaging way that we hope they never forget! Our simulation day will be on February 12th and we are so excited to bring Biztown to life with our 5th graders.

Students constructed animal robots out of items brought from home and began to code them to move their head or tails and even... light up their eyes! The final part of the project will include students creating a video showcasing their animal robot to share with their family.

Central Manor Garden

September 15, 2023

This week marked the 10 year anniversary of the Central Manor garden. Over the years, the Edible Classroom was formed, and they graciously support our garden now. Every year in the spring and fall, teachers are able to sign up for garden lessons and students learn about planting and harvesting garden crops. Mark your calendars as we will be having a week long Garden Celebration the week of September 25th. Be on the lookout for more information to come home with your student in the upcoming week.

Tech Talk with Charlie

March 16, 2023

This week our PTO hosted a tech talk evening with our district Chief Information Officer, Charlie Reisinger. Charlie was on hand to talk to parents about internet safety, online security and safeguarding your passwords. His message was clear, technology is constantly changing and parents you need to be informed! He also discussed how popular apps such as Snapchat and TicTok have age limits (13 years and older) and ways parents can monitor usage based on student's age. He urged parents to learn more about ChatGPT, an AI program that students can visit similar to a website like Google. It operates as a chat bot, you can type in a questions and it conversationally produces an answer. To learn more about ChatGPT click on the link below to watch Charlie's interview on WGAL In Focus with Susan Shapiro.

CM Community Update

March 14, 2023

Dear Central Manor Community,

Today at 12:30 PM, an odor was detected in our lower lobby bathroom area. The odor was isolated to a heater in the 5th/6th grade girls bathroom. District staff immediately diagnosed the situation and turned off the heater for inspection. This smell did not cause the firm alarm to go off and did not significantly disrupt building operations.

Coincidentally, shortly after the heater was diagnosed, the building lost power for a few seconds. This brief outage was not connected to the heating issue. Shortly after 1:00 PM, the building resumed normal procedures and the 5th/6th grade girls bathroom remained closed for the day.

Central Manor students featured in Google CS First video

January 12, 2023

Students and staff at Central Manor Elementary School are among the “stars” of a new video created by Google to promote its CS First software, which helps students learn coding.

The 3½ -minute video, “CS First: Unlock Opportunities for Students with Computer Science,”  was released to the public on January 3. View it here.

Over the summer, Google reached out to Judy Keller, a Penn Manor technology trainer, to see if Penn Manor would be interested in participating in the project, which showcases how three schools use the software. Judy is a certified Google trainer and has helped implement CS First in all our elementary schools.

On October 12, a film crew came to Karli Broomell’s fifth-grade Central Manor classroom to film a science lesson that utilized CS First.

Prior to the filming, students completed a unit on cells, organelles and the roles they play. Mrs. Broomell then challenged students to create a skit using CS First in which a cell’s organelles have conversations with each other describing their functions.

Students broke into small groups to write a script for their skit and then worked on their own using CS First to complete their project, putting their own unique touch on it, Mrs. Broomell said.

“In the end, one student was on her way to producing a rap song about cells utilizing the skills she had learned in the CS First curriculum.”

That student was among several who were interviewed for the video, along with Mrs. Keller and Mrs. Broomell. The video also features footage of students at work on the project in the classroom and a shot of the Central Manor playground.

“It was such a neat experience to watch a film crew at work right within the walls of our classroom,” said Mrs. Broomell. “The students loved the video.”

Many thanks to our students and staff, as well as Google, for making this opportunity possible.

Winter weather notification procedures for 2022-2023

As we enter the winter season, we want to remind parents/guardians of the procedures Penn Manor will follow in announcing changes to our school schedule caused by inclement weather.

School closings and delays will be posted on the district website and Twitter feed and shared with Lancaster Newspapers and local radio and television stations before 6 a.m., whenever possible. You can also call the inclement weather hotline at (717) 872-9500, ext. 2333, to check on the status of Penn Manor schools.

When inclement weather conditions develop during the day, resulting in an early closing, parents will be notified via automated phone call. Phone calls will NOT be made for closings/delays announced before the school day begins.

During an early dismissal for inclement weather, high school and middle school students will generally be dismissed first, followed by elementary students.

During two-hour delays with modified kindergarten, all school-related functions, including transportation, will begin two hours later than normal.

Modified kindergarten schedule: AM Kindergarten will start at 11 a.m. and run until 12:45 p.m. PM Kindergarten will run from 1:45 p.m. until the regular dismissal time.

Snow days: There are four weather makeup days built into the 2022-2023 district calendar, and if schools need to close because of inclement weather, school will be in session on these days. Once the weather makeup days have been exhausted, students will have virtual school in the event of additional school closings.

Sapphire notifications: Penn Manor uses the Sapphire phone and text communications service for rapid notifications. The system uses contact information from the Sapphire student information system. To assure you are contacted, please make sure your email address and phone information are updated in your Sapphire Community Portal account. For instructions, please see this guide.
